Rat Cage Accessories And Toys

Provide plenty of toys for a healthy, happy pet rat.

By Audrey Pavia

Rats need a well-equipped cage to be happy and healthy. Your rat’s cage should have a water bottle, food bowl, and small litter box if you want to litter train your small pet.

Good exercise toys for rats include wooden bird ladders, hung vertically or horizontally; pieces of tubing to crawl through; solid-floored exercise wheels; ferret hammocks; balls made for cats; small nest boxes; hanging cotton ropes and plastic flower pots.

Rats need hard surfaces to gnaw on to wear down their constantly growing teeth. Provide hard dog biscuits, unpainted wooden blocks or rawhide dog toys for chewing.

Hi Rachel,
With the help of some wire for hanging from the hardware store(~2$) I'm trying to make my own hammocks. My sewing friend tells me that fleece does not unravel so that will be my first try.

My rat chewed a hole in my mom's shirt and since I am 10 and can't wear it I decided to put it in my rat's cage and let her pull it through her house. I have bought dog buiscuits to give her as treats and I am thinking of getting her a ferrete hammock or bird ladder but I don't have much money left on my petstore giftcard?
