Healthy rats are active and interactive pets, and they breathe without effort. A healthy rat has a clean nose free of discharge, and droppings in the cage are firm and round. A shiny coat is a good sign that a rat is well cared for.
A number of warning signs indicate that a rat may be unhealthy and in need of vet care. The following signs all warrant a trip to the vet:
- Pale eyes
- A dull coat
- Lethargy
- Aggression
- Wheezing
- Diarrhea
- Patchy fur or bald spots
