Mouse Cage Maintenance

Make a weekly maintenance schedule to keep your mouse’s cage clean.

By Audrey Pavia

Remove soiled bedding every day from your mouse’s cage to reduce odor and keep your small pet healthy. Replace it with fresh bedding to keep ammonia levels down in your mouse’s cage.

Wash out food bowls and water bottles every day. Remove uneaten food each day and replace with fresh food.

Once a week, wash out your mouse’s cage completely. Scrub the cage bars and floor with hot water and biodegradable dish soap, rinse completely and let it dry in the sun, if possible. Toys and accessories should be washed too.

This is very good advice. I have noticed that if the cage is not cleaned often enough, the smell can get quite strong. And imagine being the little guy who has to be in that cage all day! The cleaning process (cage plus toys and tunneling tubes) can be time consuming, but it's worth it. And I like to put my mouse in his exercise ball (on its stationary stand) right on the counter next to where I'm working so I can keep an eye on him and he can have fun and be close by. We put the radio on and sing along!
