Hedgehog Bedding And Litter Basics

Provide bedding for a hedgehog to burrow in.

By Audrey Pavia

The best bedding for a hedgehog’s cage is recycled paper litter or aspen shavings. Hedgehogs enjoy burrowing into this soft bedding, which is absorbent and helps control cage odors.

Cedar and non kiln-dried pine shavings are not recommended because they can carry a strong scent that may irritate the hedgehog’s airways. Sawdust is not recommended either because it can cause respiratory issues in hedgehogs. Some experts warn against corn cob bedding because it can harm hedgehogs if they ingest it.

Bedding can be placed in the hedgehog’s nest box, as well as in a litter box. Some hedgehog owners use dust-free, non-clumping cat litter for the litter box and paper litter or aspen shavings for the nest box.
