Hedgehog Food Storage Tips

Follow these tips to keep your hedgehog’s food fresh.

By Audrey Pavia

Dry Food Storage
Store your hedgehog’s dry food in a sealed container, in a cool, dry place in your home. Don’t store dry food for more than two months as it loses its nutritional value the longer it’s kept.

Insect Treats
Mealworms should be kept in the refrigerator to slow down their metabolism and keep them alive longer. They can stay in the original store container, provided it has bran or oatmeal inside and a cover with a ventilated lid.

Crickets should be stored in a ventilated container and gut-loaded for at least 24 hours before being fed to your hedgehog. Gut-load the crickets by providing them with a slice of fruit or raw potato, or feed them a commercial cricket food.

Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables should be kept refrigerated to prevent spoiling. Never feed overripe fruit or spoiled vegetables to your hedgehog.
