Guinea Pig Playtime

Learn how guinea pigs play.

By Audrey Pavia

Guinea pigs love to play with each other and with toys. To encourage your guinea pigs to play with each other, give them out-of-cage time in a guinea pig-proofed room. Give them toys to play with and watch them chase each other and jump up in the air.

Favorite toys of guinea pigs include cardboard boxes, empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls, cat toys such as balls and stuffed socks, sections of PVC pipe, paper bags, straw baskets and commercial toys for small animals. Alternate your small pets’ toys to keep them from getting bored with current toys.

You should play with your guinea pig, too. This will encourage them to bond with you, and will be fun for you and your small pets. Lay down on the floor with each guinea pig and roll toys to it. Use treats to teach it to come to you when you call its name and to sit up and beg.

Spend time just quietly holding your small pet as well. Have your guinea pig sit in your lap while you are watching TV and let it fall asleep as you stroke its fur. These quiet times will do wonders to help you bond.

Our guinea pig girl Penny loves when we build box castles for her and Happy. Walmart has a surprisingly affordable collection of smaller shipping boxes we connect and stack. We can change it up or replace easy, cut doors into ect. just be careful if you are using packing tape. make sure it is fully attached to the cardboard, we go without by cutting slits.
However her absolute favorite to play with is Happy our 2 year old Lop Bunny. They have their individual cages to sleep in, but spend every moment of the day together running around the sunroom. It is funny to see how they have figured each other out and learned each others language. we have never seen them fight or argue. We got Penny as a baby and Happy is still convinced she is her baby, grooming and protecting her whenever visitors "bother" Penny

My guinea pigs play with anything! But they like beds to hide in. They have a ferret toy that looks like a tree stump thats the best bed toy! My girls run in & out of it some times they climb on it & roll it around when they are in it. They will roll plastic easter eggs on the floor take my book im reading out of my hands & try to runn with it. I think my girls have alot of fun out of the cage & in there play pen with me. I get them out every day for an hour each. On the weekend 2 or more hours out to play!
