To start this ferret tapestry project, you need a design. You might find designs in books or choose to draw one. If you draw a design, just create a simple plan to give you an overall view. Changes can and will be made as you go along.

- A design for the tapestry
- A large piece of felt in each of the following colors: red, tan, brown, pink, light green, dark green, white

We will use the Valentine design for this article. This project can be sewn or glued. The Valentine uses a combination of both.
Now that you have your design, decide what size you want the heart to be. The one I created measures 26 inches wide (from dole holder to lower tip) and 32 inches long. You can make it larger or smaller but will need to adjust the images that are sewn in to match.
Cutting And Assembling The Ferret Tapestry
Ferret Tapestry Assembly Step #1 To create the large heart, you need three large pieces of felt. One is the Valentine (red), the backing (tan) and the border design on the front of the heart (light pink). Fold each layer in half and stack all three layers on top of each other. By cutting half of the heart on folded material, your two sides will match perfectly. By stacking and cutting together, the hearts will all be identical in size and shape. (Click image to enlarge.) |

Ferret Tapestry Assembly Step #2 Cut out the interior of the pink heart a couple inches from the outer edge using a scallop design. (Click image to enlarge.) |

Ferret Tapestry Assembly Step #3 Pin all three hearts together and stitch the outside of the heart and the inside of the scallop. (Click image to enlarge.) |

Ferret Tapestry Assembly Step #4 Cut out a long, thick strip (green) with a heart at each end as shown. When folded in half, this becomes the loop to put the wooden dole through to hang the tapestry. Cut one pink or red heart that is smaller than the green heart and place it on one of the hearts. You need to make two of these loops. (Click image to enlarge.) |

Ferret Tapestry Assembly Step #5 Sew or glue the pink hearts on to the green, fold the green in half so that the green hearts are together and stitch to the large heart. This should be sewn or glued heavily, as it will carry the weight of the tapestry. (Click image to enlarge.) |
