Regrowing Fur On A Ferret With Adrenal Gland Disease

Are there vitamins or supplements that can help a ferret with adrenal gland disease regrow fur?

Q: I have a ferret that is losing hair. I hear there is some type of vitamin you can give them to help promote hair growth, but I can't remember what it was. Do you know? If so, please let me know so I can give it to her and help her grow some of the hair she lost due to adrenal disease. I have six ferrets now that are doing well, and the one with the adrenal gland disease is still very lively and healthy. She’s had adrenal gland disease for two years and it has not slowed her down. She is one of the last from the very first group of ferrets I started with. She and her brother are very special to me and both are going on 8 years old.

A: Unfortunately, there is no vitamin or supplement that can regrow hair in a ferret with adrenal gland disease. The only way to regrow hair is to treat the adrenal gland disease. This could be with injectable or long-acting medications or oral medications or surgery.

It is not uncommon for ferrets treated for adrenal gland disease to have only partial hair regrowth. You may want to speak to your veterinarian to see if your ferret needs further treatment.

Finally, it is important that your ferret be on the best diet possible. We always recommend high-quality diets made specifically for ferrets to get the best nutrients for your ferret.

Spencer, 3, a male ferret has recently been diagnosed with adrenal disease. We are opting for Lupron treatment and melatonin implants. He is almost bald and to see him shiver during the winter months is heartbreaking! I bought a little sweatshirt, but he won't wear it. This article touched on the hair growth issue nicely.
