Ferrets And Mealworms

Is it safe to feed ferrets mealworms?

By Karen Rosenthal, DVM, DABVP

Q: Do you think it is OK to feed my ferrets mealworms that have had their head chopped off?

A: I would not recommend this. Mealworms are not nutritionally complete for ferrets. If a ferret was to eat too many mealworms and not enough of a balanced diet, your ferret could be lacking important nutrients.

As a treat, if you feel compelled to feed this to your ferret, it is probably OK to do this. But with so many excellent ferret foods on the market, I would not recommend this type of treat.
