Is it normal for ferret urine to crystallize?

Q: Why does it seem that my ferret’s urine seems to crystallize after sitting for a while?

A: Actually, the urine of all animals will crystallize if left to sit for a while. What happens is the liquid portion of the urine evaporates and the minerals that are normally in the urine are left behind and begin to crystallize. How soon this happens depends on the environmental conditions and the condition of the urine.

If you are concerned that your ferret may have crystals in its urine, take a fresh sample to your veterinarian’s office and let him or her do a urinalysis on the sample to make sure there are no abnormalities in the urine.
