Ferret Fears Nail Trimming

Why do ferrets dislike getting their nails trimmed?

Q: Every week for the past four years my ferret gets his nails trimmed. Never, and I do mean never, have I clipped a nail too short. So please tell me, why does my ferret act like I’m killing him or that I’m trying to cut his toe off?

A: Honestly, I have no idea for certain why ferrets do this, but it is a common problem in most pets. Dogcat and ferret owners all seem to struggle with nail trimming.

I can only guess the ferrets and other pets are uncomfortable with being restrained and the pressure on their nails. Pets also don’t know why you are doing it or what you are actually doing.

i use one of their round pillows and make a nice snuggle hole in the middle , put them in it on their back a little ferretone on the belly and you're ready to go. if they finish the ferretone before you're done just give another couple of drops on the tummy

I have always clipped my ferret's nails when he is sleeping. I put him on a blanket on my couch, put on additional lighting and clip away. Its like he has no idea this is happening.

I have found the best way to trim my crew's nails!
I hold a tube of Ferret Lax between my knees. I then hold the ferret in my lap and let them lick the tube. While s/he is licking the tube, I start clipping nails. Works every time! They are so busy licking the tube they pay no attention to me and what I am doing. Nail trimming goes quickly and uneventfully...for both of us!
