Do Chihuahua dogs and ferrets get along?

Q: I have a small, 4-pound Chihuahua dog at home and three cats. I want to get a ferret, but I don’t know how it would react to my dog. My dad thinks a ferret would hurt him, but if I got a baby ferret and raised it around the Chihuahua, do you think that would be OK and they would get along well?

A: In my experience, dogs and ferrets should never be expected to play together without one or the other getting hurt. They may get along well under supervision, but I would never leave them alone nor would I expect them to get along. Dogs and ferrets do not “speak the same language,” and there is too much potential for injury to either party.
