Ferrets And Play Sand

Is play sand safe for ferrets to walk on?

Q: I have a question about outside play areas for my ferrets. I was going to build them a semi-permanent area on our deck and was wondering if it would be OK to use fine-grade play sand in the bottom, or should I use a potting or top soil?

A: In this case, my suggestion is to use play sand for your ferrets' play area, the kind used for playgrounds, as it is clean and should be safe. Check it often, though, as it can easily become infected with sand fleas, etc. Potting soils probably would not be a good choice for ferrets to play on because these can come with too many contamination issues (intestinal worms, etc).

In response to the play sand for Ferrets. I use a big 5 pound bag of inexpensive rice. The ferrets enjoy digging for buried items and it is clean except for when they kick it out of the big plastic container I as a playbox
