Ferret With Strange Mouth Movements

Why would a ferret suddenly move its mouth and tongue like it has a hair stuck in its mouth?

Q: My ferret is a 5-year-old male, and I have noticed within the last week that he moves his mouth and tongue like he has a hair in his mouth. He was at the vet's, who checked his mouth and teeth and found nothing wrong. My ferret has no problem eating his dry food and eats everything with no problem. Any idea what’s going on?

A: In my experience and when my own ferret did this, she ended up having an ulcer and her mouth movements weren’t caused by a behavioral issue.

If your ferret is salivating a lot, get back to the vet to investigate other possible medical causes of this behavior. Often in animals, the behavior isn't directly (or obviously) related to the actual problem.

Is the hob full (ie NOT castrated?). If so this time of year is the start of the breeding season and he is "tasting" the air looking for a mate. Looks most peculiar when you first see it - when I first did I thought there was something wrong too, but it is a natural thing that some hobs (sometimes jills) do.
