Darkness And Ferrets

Why would a ferret avoid dark places?

Q: Is it possible for ferrets to be afraid of the dark? My ferret Scrambles seems to avoid dark places.
A: Historically, ferrets are descended from polecats that live underground and are crepuscular (they come out at dawn and dust to hunt), so it would seem unlikely that a ferret would be born afraid of the dark. We also have an idea that too much exposure to light can cause problems, which also leads me to think that Scrambles shouldn't be afraid of the dark.

On the other hand, your ferret may have had a scary or bad experience in certain places that cause him to avoid some dark places. Or, dark places may be offensive to him by smelling odd, being damp or not being fun.
