Ferret Nibbles Its Litter

Is it OK if a ferret eats its bedding?

Q: I have a 3-year-old, female ferret that sometimes eats pieces of her bedding. I use a brand that is recycled cardboard. Why does she do that, and should I be concerned? She has food in her bowl.

A: You might want to consider offering your ferret gently used clothing and towels as bedding. This allows them to curl into it and for you to wash it easily and often.

Eating cardboard could be due to a lot of different things, including a poor diet (she should be on a high-quality kibble) or boredom. Ferrets are easily bored and need human interaction daily, as well as activities and things to do inside their cage.
