Protecting Furniture From Ferrets

What can you do to prevent a mattress-loving ferret from ruining the mattress?

Q: I got a new mattress for my bed, and my ferret comes up on the bed and keeps scratching at it. I don't want to keep him off my bed, so what can I do? My baby ferret loves my bed.

A: It would be possible to keep your ferret from getting into the mattress, but other than keeping him off the bed, I am not sure you can get him to stop digging.

Ferrets are naturally diggers, and something about the mattress is encouraging that instinct. It may go away in time, but if you want to preserve the mattress, you will need to keep him off it.
