Chances Of A Lost Ferret Coming Home

Is it likely that a lost ferret will find its way home?

Q: Our ferret escaped four days ago. We live in Oregon, and it’s very cold at night. I have searched the roads every day and haven’t seen her on the side. How far from home will a ferret travel knowing it has a warm place to be? How far can a ferret travel a day? What are the chances someone saw her and picked her up? Do you think there is any chance we may see her again?

A: When your ferret is lost, first make sure your neighbors, mailman and other people in your area know to keep an eye out for your missing ferret. Make some lost posters to place around the neighborhood. Contact your local animal shelters and veterinarians to see if anyone has found your ferret.

Second, make sure you have ferret food and water in a kennel or small cage outside your house in case your ferret smells its way back home.

I tried to find statistics on lost ferrets being found, but I couldn’t find very many. It was noted that many lost ferrets are actually still in the home somewhere, so make sure to thoroughly check inside, too. It is always helpful to have a current photo of your ferret for use in a lost poster, especially a photo that shows any identifiable markings.

I have two ferrets and live in a mobile home, the other day my cat opened the kitchen cabinet under the sink where there is a hole. and one of my ferrets were missing, he was gone for about 43 hours. I crawled under our home and found him between the floor and insulation got a little dirty, came across a lot a spiders but it was worth it. He came crawling into my arms he was happy to see me as i was to see him.

We've lost our ferret Franny last night....it's winter here but right now very mild. Franny is small and afraid of loud noises....so it is likely she is hiding somewhere. She has a favourite squeaky toy and always comes when we squeak it but there's no response inside or outside the house. We don't let our ferrets out at all, but Franny has managed to race out the door twice but we've always caught her....but no one remembers seeing her once she left her cage last night for the evening playtime. How long will she survive in weather like this? Any ideas we haven't thought of to look?

My ferret went missing two days ago. Every evening we let them out to play. My husband had just turned off the air conditioner and opened the living room windows(I never did get the screens in as it went from cold to hot fast!) Anyway after a short time of play I noticed Boots was not playing with Daisy! Frantic I checked all his hiding places and noticed the open windows which are right behind the couch.....He must have fallen out or climbed down the strubs outside the window! I've looked everywhere for two days now and nothing:( I'm sooooo upset and don't know where else to look! He's never been outside and is a very gentle ferret. I've asked around but with no luck.
