How Can Owners Get A Ferret To Drink Water?

Why won’t a ferret drink from a water bottle?

Q: We brought home our new ferret, Zoe, last Thursday, and we are getting concerned about her lack of interest in food and, more importantly, water. She is not going to the water bottle spontaneously and drinking. I got her to drink a little by holding her up to the bottle until yesterday, but now she will not drink out of it at all. I forced her to drink water by putting it in a syringe, but this is not a long-term solution. What should I do?

A: First, a visit to the veterinarian is needed to make sure she is healthy. Any number of things could be causing a problem that prevents your ferret from drinking.

Another thing to be aware of is that it doesn’t take a lot of water loss for a ferret to become seriously dehydrated. It is hard to force-feed a ferret enough to make a difference, so dehydrated ferrets usually require IV fluids.

Finally, try offering water in a dish instead of a bottle, but have her checked out by a veterinarian first.

all my ferrets drink from a bowl which I like cause I know they are getting plenty of water to drink, especially fresh cold water my guys love the most never had problem-I find that ferrets in some case don't seem to get enough water when drinking from a bottle..I have some that like to snorkel in the water bowl..which I find cute and funny

I give my ferrets water in a bowl and in a bottle, my one female drinks from the bowl only and my others drink from both. I change the bowl water daily

Yes, definitely s vet visit, but also consider that the water itself may be bad. We periodically have trouble with our water and the ferrets always know it before we do. They also object to the treatments added to clean it up. So, during those times we follow their lead and all of us go on bottled water temporarily.
