Ferrets And Dachshunds

Can dogs and ferrets play together safely?

Q: Do dogs (dachshunds) and ferrets play nice together, or will they be nice to each other if they’re alone in the house?

A: Dogs and ferrets can play nice together, but it depends on the dog and the ferret. Dogs and ferrets should never be left along together. All playtime must be strictly supervised, because either pet could hurt the other.

If you would like them to play together, it can only be when someone is available to watch them both while they are out together. This means no time unsupervised, even a quick trip into the kitchen for a snack.

Some dogs have great personalities around smaller animals, but others might see the ferret as prey. Also, the ferret may be fine with the dog or it may antagonize the dog or try to play inappropriately.

My ferret and Yorkie have "play time" almost every day. They are about the same size and the ferret loves to play hide, seek, and attack. I watch them closely and usually after an hour or so someone will get fussy and then they can go their seperate ways. I would advise caution about encouraging any pouncing or biting behavior on either side. Sometimes dogs can get carried away because they think they are a fuzzy chew toy...

Dachshund is German for Badger Dog, and he was bred to hunt Badgers, a close cousin to Ferrets. I'd take the well-worn advice, "Never unsupervised." Any animal can turn on a dime in his behaviour between his instinct and training.

Hi, I have 12 dachshunds and 6 ferrets. Everyone gets along, BUT I am the pack leader and it took me about 9 months to get to this stage. Remember Dachshunds are hounds and therefore hunters.
