Ferret Noises

What noises are normal for ferrets?

Q: My ferret, Scamper, is about 2 and a half years old. When we hold her, it sounds like she is purring. Is that possible? Also, when she plays she seems to be making a kind of grunting noise. Is this normal?

A: For such “quiet” animals, ferrets sure do make a lot of different noises! While I doubt Scamper is actually purring (it is believed that cats and only a couple of other animals purr), she is probably making a noise signaling contentment.

If your ferret is physically healthy and in shape, then most of her noises are playful and normal ferret noises. Some of these noises include dooking, whining, hissing, or even barking (when afraid).

What I want to know is what sounds disturb ferrets and why does my 1 and a half year old male Timi always come running to pull any squeakiy toy away from me then go hide it. If I don't release the toy he will bite me anywhere he can then run off with the toy when I drop it.

I have three ferrets, Timi asable chocolate, a panda female named Tina about his age and a four year old albino female named White Fir all three are rescue ferrets I have saved from abandonment or certain destruction.

My ferret Bandit heard an ambulance a few nights ago which came very close to my house and Bandit
Mimicked the ambulance perfectly and loud enough
to wake the entire house----I stood out of sight and watched and couldnt believe it.

I have three ferrets--a two year old male, a one year old male, and a six month old female. The oldest male rarely ever makes a sound, while the younger male only hisses when playing. They have always been like that, ever since they were babies. The female makes every kind of noise all the time, especially the dooking.
