If you want to attend the 2014 Gathering For Ferrets, don't be caught sleeping. Registration ends soon.
It’s the last days of April, and the countdown to the 2014 Alaska Gathering For Ferrets is getting serious. Renee Downs, who is organizing the event, said the deadline to register for it is June 1. After that, a late fee of $10 is added through June 15 and a $25 fee added June 16 until the day of the event.(walk-ins will try to be accommodated). Although June sounds far off, May 1 happens this week.
The Gathering is an educational event about pet ferrets taking place June 27 and 28, 2014, at the BP Energy Center in Anchorage, Alaska. A shelter benefit dinner takes place the evening of June 26. Speakers at the event include Natalie Antinoff, DVM, DABVP, Rene Gandolfi, DVM, DABVP, Jerry Murray, DVM, Karen Purcell, DVM, Katrina Ramsell, Ph.D., DVM, and Robert Wagner, DVM, DABVP. The topics range from common urinary and gastrointestinal obstructions to insulinoma to cancer to emerging diseases and much more. In addition to the veterinarian speakers, Kevin Farlee and Debbi Walcker of the Washington Ferret Rescue & Shelter and Barb Carlson of the Hide-E-Hole Ferret Rescue are also giving talks.
A memorial presentation is planned, and Downs hopes people will send her a photo and information about any members of the ferret community who have passed since 2011 when the International Ferret Congress hosted a symposium in Phoenix. Photos and information (name, date of passing, information about life, etc.) can be emailed to email@example.com before June 15.
In early April, the Gathering was approved for 13 hours of RACE credits, which means that the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) will recognize 13 hours of continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary techs who attend.
Downs said Lisa Oestereich and Debbie Saunders are running an online auction that begins on May 1 and runs through June 15. It will feature many wonderful products. Look for an announcement about the link to the auction on the Gathering's Facebook page. Items not auctioned online will be added to the live auction taking place at the event.
Alaska is a beautiful place and in the summer daylight lasts nearly 24 hours. Downs is hoping attendees can visit some of the local sights. After the event on Sunday, June 29, Downs suggests three possible outings for attendees: The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, the Alaska Zoo and the Anchorage Market And Festival. Downs said people could easily do two of these in one day, but it is possible to do all three if you keep moving.
Additionally, Dianna Desrochers and Downs have posted an announcement on the Facebook event page for the 2014 Gathering For Ferrets to determine if there is enough interest to hold a webinar of the presentations a month or two after the event for those who cannot attend the event in Alaska in person. This possibility is still undecided, because it depends on whether enough people around the country show interest in holding a "webinar viewing party” or watching on their own. For more information, people can email firstname.lastname@example.org
Also for those who wish to support the event but are unable to attend, a website was setup to take T-shirt (long and short sleeve) pre-orders, sponsorship donations and shelter benefit dinner donations.
