On August 1, 2010, Dr. Vittorio Capello, a veterinarian specializing in exotic animal medicine in Milan, Italy, was presented with the 2010 Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award at the 2010 Association of Avian Veterinarians/Assocation of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians Conference in San Diego. A reception was held in his honor on August 3rd.
Established in 2009, the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award is an annual award presented to an animal health professional who advances the field of exotic mammal medicine and care. Oxbow Animal Health provides premium nutrition for small exotic animals worldwide.
“We could not be more excited to recognize Dr. Capello and his contributions to the field of small exotic medicine,” said John Miller, president of Oxbow Animal Health. “Dr. Capello’s reputation as a leader, teacher and advocate in the small exotics field is world-renowned. His work is a testament to everything the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award stands for.”
According to Oxbow, Capello has lectured, published and taught exotic animal courses and practical laboratories throughout Italy, other parts of Europe and United States, and has been a guest lecturer for four years at the International Conference on Exotics, where he was voted most appreciated speaker in 2003 and 2004 and received the Exotic DVM Paper of the Year Award in 2005. Capello served as speaker at the North American Veterinary Conference, the British Small Animal Veterinary Conference, and the European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry. He is author of the Rabbit and Rodent Dentistry Handbook and Clinical Radiology of Exotic Companion Mammals and has both written and served as guest editor for numerous publications, including the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine and Exotic DVM Magazine. He is a member of the advisory board of Exotic DVM magazine and member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV).
The Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award is based on excellence in one or more of the following areas: exhibiting leadership in the field of exotic mammal health, advancing the understanding of clinical diseases and treatments in exotic mammal pets, promoting the field of exotic mammal medicine, promoting the field of exotic mammal nutrition or providing innovation to the field of exotic mammal medicine. Nominations are made by submitting a CV and letter of recommendation describing the individual and how he or she exemplifies the required qualities.
