Competitors at a previous Hamster Ball Derby line up for the start of one of the races.
Petco’s annual Hamster Ball Derby is rolling into all Petco stores nationwide on Saturday, April 24, 2010. The event, sponsored by Kaytee and Super Pet, invites owners of hamsters and other small animals to race their furry friends in hamster balls down 8-foot tracks. Each race kicks off with a brief tutorial from a Petco companion animal specialist on how to care for a small animal.
This year, Petco expects up to 100 classroom pets to join the competition as part of an ongoing education partnership with Field Trip Factory, a Chicago-based provider of hands-on learning experiences. Together, Petco and Field Trip Factory sponsor Fur, Feathers and Fins, an in-store animal welfare program offered to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Hamster Ball Derby participants must bring their own pets and size-appropriate hamster balls to race. The derby is open to hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. Exotic animals will not be permitted to participate.
First-place derby winners at each store will receive a Kaytee Forti Diet-Pro Health small animal starter kit. Second-place winners will receive Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Healthy Bit Treats. Third place winners will take home a Super Pet Combo Chew.
Registration is free. Sign-ups and practice sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. The derby begins at 2 p.m. For more information on the event, training tips and a 20 percent off coupon for a Super Pet Run-about ball, visit Petco’s website.
