Petco's Hamster Ball Derby will take place on October 3, 2009.
Calling all furry speed demons — Petco is hosting its annual Hamster Ball Derby on Oct. 3, 2009, at all of its more than 950 stores nationwide.
During the event, which drew more than 12,000 participants last year, hamsters and other small animals will race down 8-foot tracks in hamster balls. Each race will kick off with a brief tutorial from a Petco companion animal specialist or store manager on how to care for a small animal.
“This event is so much fun and a great way to bring kids and pets together in their communities for some friendly competition,” said Elisabeth Charles, Petco’s chief marketing officer. “It’s also a great venue for us to help educate our youngest pet parents on how to properly and responsibly care for their small animals at home.”
The Hamster Ball Derby is open to hamsters, gerbils (where legal), mice and rats. Chinchillas, guinea pigs and other exotic animals will not be permitted to participate.
All participants will receive a “My pet ran in the Hamster Ball Derby” sticker.
First-place derby winners at each store will receive a medal and a Kaytee Forti Diet Pro Health small animal starter kit. The kit includes food, bedding, a treat and chew.
Second-place winners will receive a ribbon and a Super Pet Hamburger Crispy Combo chew. Third place winners will take a home a ribbon and a Kaytee Hamster Single Honey Treat Stick.
Participants must bring their own pets and hamster balls to race. Registration is free. Sign-ups and practice sessions begin at 1:30 p.m. The Hamster Ball Derby begins at 2 p.m. For more information, visit Petco's Hamster Ball Derby website.
