Oxbow Animal Health named Cathy Johnson-Delaney, DVM, Dipl. ABVP (avian), as the winner of the 2009 Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award.

Oxbow Animal Health, based in Murdock, Nebraska, presents the annual award to an animal health professional who advances the field of exotic mammal medicine and care.

Johnson-Delaney, who specializes in avian/exotic animal medicine in the greater Puget Sound area in Washington, was honored with the award at the 2009 Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians / Association of Avian Veterinarians Conference on August 9 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A reception followed in her honor on August 11.

“The Oxbow award was a huge honor,” Johnson-Delaney said. She also admired the design of the award.

“Cathy Johnson-Delaney exemplifies all of the qualities symbolized by the Oxbow Animal Health Exotic Mammal Health Award,” said John Miller, president of Oxbow Animal Health. “From her unwavering presence in both practice and professional organizations to a publishing and presentation record that is an undeniable testament to her dedication to scholarship and continued education within the field, Cathy’s distinguished career as a veterinarian represents a commitment not just to present health of the exotic industry, but a commitment to the future as well.”

The sculpture given as the award is named The Quest. It was designed by Oxbow Animal Health to represent the journey of the animal health professional. At the heart of The Quest is a structure resembling the serpent-encircled staff of Asclepius, Greek god of healing and international symbol of medicine. The upward spiral also represents the quest of veterinary professionals as they seek to fulfill the tenets of the Veterinarian’s Oath. Framing the spiral are three interlocking spheres, each one symbolizing an important facet of the professional quest: to promote animal health, to advance medical knowledge and to benefit society.
