After nearly a month of anticipation, the 2009 Peter Gurney Memorial Candle Lighting Map was revealed on the Guinea Pig Daily Digest website. The map shows where people across the world lit a candle at 8 p.m. in their time zone in memory of Peter Gurney, a well-known guinea pig enthusiast and author who passed away in 2006. The candle-lighting ceremony also gave people a chance to remember departed guinea pigs.
In 2009, people and guinea pigs in the following nine countries participated in the ceremony: Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, United States and Canada.
The idea for the candle-lighting ceremony originated with Audrey Binder, a member of the Guinea Pig Daily Digest. March 9 was chosen as the date for the ceremony, because that was Peter Gurney’s birthday.
Binder has organized each candle-lighting ceremony since 2006. After the event, people who lit a candle let her know, and she compiles that data. This year, the world map has been added and is the creation of other Guinea Pig Daily Digest members.
