Critters USA: From The Editor

By Marylou Zarbock

More and more people welcome pets into their home every year. Through the past several years, a solid 5 to 7 percent of those millions of pet owners are choosing to have non-traditional pets share their lives. If you’re one of those whose heart belongs to a cute rabbit or cuddly guinea pig, this magazine is for you.

We’re here to celebrate the greatness of small “pocket pets.” This year, we even add the land hermit crab to the list of critters put into the spotlight. Our goal is to help pet owners understand their pet better, so that the experience of owning a pet is positive for both owner and pet. Along the way, we also have some fun. After all, a big part of owning a pet is having fun interacting with it or enjoying its antics. The rat article in particular focuses solely on games to play with your pet. But don’t pass up any of the others. You’ll be surprised by the tidbits of information you learn from each article.

This year, we tried something new with a children’s section. It’s our first-ever, and I hope that children will enjoy reading what other pet owners their age think about their pets, plus we’ve got games, books and a calendar of small animal celebrations!
And don’t miss out on the product giveaways. Turn to Page 98 to peruse some great new products for small animals and find out which ones you can send entries to win on Page 105.

As always, we’ve updated the directory of resources and list of veterinarians who treat these pets that are part of our family. It’s our biggest veterinarian listing yet.

There’s a lot packed into this issue. I hope it helps you celebrate a happy life together with your chosen pet pal.
