Rabbit’s Ears Missing Fur

Is missing fur normal for a Mini Lop rabbit?

Q: I recently noticed patches of fur missing from my Mini Lop rabbit’s ears. He’s not itching, scratching or acting weird. Should I keep an eye on it, or should I call the veterinarian?

A: Some parts of a rabbit’s ears and around the ears may have more fur than other parts. If the fur is symmetrical — looks the same on both ears — what you are seeing may be normal. If you are convinced this is abnormal, go to your veterinarian rather than waiting. Any disease is easier to treat earlier in the disease rather than later.

If your Mini Lop rabbit is in any discomfort, the sooner you see your veterinarian, the sooner the discomfort might go away. Your veterinarian may do some tests to search for skin mites, skin fungal infections and bacterial skin infections.
