Q: I have a guinea pig, and he is very jumpy; every little sound startles him. What do I need to do to get him to be less jumpy? This is my first guinea pig.
A: Approach your guinea pig quietly and with slow movements. Offer him a bit of carrot or a treat to help reinforce that you are a friend. Talk in a whisper and keep movement at eye level to help your guinea pig overcome its fear.
No two guinea pigs are alike, so some can take more time than others to get used to human kindness and interaction. Like any animal, the more time you spend with it the more you will be rewarded for your patience.
