Should I Get My Guinea Pig A New Playmate?

If a guinea pig’s friend passes on, should you get a new guinea pig?

Q: I had two guinea pigs, but one of them recently died from a disease. These two had been together for their entire lives. The other guinea pig is eating well and does not seem very sad. Should I get another guinea pig to keep her company?

A: Since she is doing so well after the death of her companion, replacing that friend may or may not be necessary. The decision is up to you. If you are going to be able to give your guinea pig lots of attention, and you don’t want another guinea pig, then having one guinea pig is OK. But if you are not going to be able to give your guinea pig lots of attention, then a buddy would occupy her time and give her needed interaction. Some guinea pigs need the interaction of another guinea pig.
