Rat Friendliness And A Farewell Blog Entry

Diddy the rat was very shy about coming out of the cage when she first arrived in her new home.

I’ve noticed over the past couple of weeks that my rat Diddy is starting to get a little friendlier. I’d always thought that, when I first picked her up from the pet store, she was a lot older than they said. She was also very timid and, judging by the way the rats were handled when the sales assistant was getting Slinky and Diddy, I’m not surprised. They weren’t hurt, but they weren’t treated with the sort of care they really needed and deserved, and I think that is why both Slinky and Diddy were quite reserved and nervous when I first brought them home.

Slinky the rat is much more brave and adventurous than Diddy, and she was eager to explore outside of her cage soon after arriving at her new home.

Slinky came round very quickly, being the more adventurous and brave out of the two of them. I think it was no more than a couple of weeks before she was clambering out of the cage and exploring the surroundings — and that still hasn’t changed. Diddy was willing to come to the door, but a little too shy to come out all the way. Although both of them really had fun running around the floor and within a few weeks trusted me enough to go to sleep on me. It’s funny, but it really means a lot when an animal feels safe enough with you to go to sleep in your clothes (and subsequently chew them at the same time, of course!).

Diddy has only recently started licking. I didn’t think she was ever going to, but it’s nice to see that even after so long, a rat can become as friendly as my rat Dumbo used to be. One of the especially cute things Diddy does is fall asleep with her head on her paws when I tickle her ears. I wish I could get a photo of her doing it, but she wakes up the second I get the camera, as ratties always tend to do.

Mouse the rat is the oldest of the rat trio and has been with Shellyane the longest.

I’m sorry to say this is my final blog entry. It amazes me that there have been so many ratty stories to tell you over the past two years. At the same time, I’m sad to have lost a couple of my rats along the way, too. I’m happy to have shared it all with you all and have really loved reading your comments and advice about my various ratty problems. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a lovely New Year with all your furry friends!
