I visited my brother this weekend and had the pleasure of meeting his two rats (Sniff and Snug) that are now fully grown — though to look at them, you wouldn’t think it! Even for adult rats that are older than the three of mine, they still look like babies. My rat Slinky is around the same size as both of them, but Diddy and Mouse would dwarf them by comparison.
It’s unusual the way rats grow, because they seem to reach a stage where they stop growing altogether for about five months and then suddenly put a lot of weight on. Having said that, my brother’s rats are absolutely adorable and the friendliest rats I’ve seen since Dumbo died. In fact, one of them — Snug, I think — looks just like Dumbo. Both of them are Berkshires; the only difference between them is Snug’s adorable, wrinkled ear!
She is a little bit shyer than Sniff, but still very sweet. The moment the cage door is open, Sniff is up and out, exploring the table and the sofa like it’s new every time. Both of them are also very affectionate, always licking every bit of skin they get near. The first thing I saw Sniff do when I arrived was lick my brother’s nose. So cute!
I really wanted to take them home with me, but I had a feeling Mouse wouldn’t appreciate even more ratties in her domain. She is definitely starting to behave herself now though, because I hear far less squeaks and fights coming from the rat cage. I’m hoping this means she has finally calmed down and is no longer tugging ears and toes.
My three rats have taken to hurling their food bowl around the cage; that is something the entire household hears! Still, I would rather they’re playing tennis with the bowl than nipping one another, so I don’t mind the noise too much.
