This weekend I had a lot family visiting, so naturally they all wanted to have a little play with the rats and get to know them a little bit. It was interesting, because now that I’ve moved home, the rats don’t often have the chance to interact with other people aside from me. They seemed excited enough to meet new people.
Slinky, of course, couldn’t wait to get out of the cage and get sniffing and exploring, bouncing from one shoulder to the next like the adventurous little ratty she is. It always astonishes me how utterly fearless she actually is, and the feats she will undertake just to discover something new.
Diddy, on the other hand, wasn’t quite as adventurous. Though she did come to the door of the cage, she was quite reluctant to leave the sanctuary that was her home. When anyone but me picked her up, she had a little bit of a panic over it. She’s not much for being held anyway and it’s taken some time to get her used to just me holding her, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. At one point she looked as though she was going to jump from my elbow, right onto my brother’s shoulder, but for some reason at the last second she decided to hurl herself toward the mug of tea his friend was holding, managed to spill it, dive-bombed and was only just rescued when I caught her.
Mouse, of course, was her typical self. She only managed to make it to the door, but my mum has branded her “evil” because she keeps biting the ears and toes of the other rats, so no one likes to attempt to pick her up. I feel sad for her really, because she doesn’t understand that what she’s doing is causing harm! Poor thing. She’ll never learn.
