Diddy (shown), Slinky and Mouse the rats are all enjoying the new accessory for their cage.

Seeing as my pet rats have a habit of destroying any cardboard box I leave in their cage (unfortunately, they don't understand that if they take away the box's foundations, it's going to collapse, leaving them with nowhere secure to sleep), I bought them something a little bit more durable than both cardboard and plastic.

I initially thought it was actually two medium-sized, bendable log arches, but it turns out that it was only one bendable log arch. Still, I was sure the rats wouldn't be particularly fussed by this, so I shaped it into a giant, hollow log shape and slid it into the cage.

I'm surprised by how quickly my three rats took to it. Normally they are quite wary of anything new that appears in their cage (take the brick for instance — I couldn't even get Slinky or Mouse to stand next to that). Yet, there they all were, eager and excited by their new climbing frame.

Unsurprisingly, Diddy and Slinky both made an attempt to chew it to pieces, but after they realized it was stronger than simple plastic or paper, they gave in. I hope, being rough and made of wood, that it will also help to keep their claws blunt, because the brick hasn't thus worked very well at doing that.

I've not caught them sleeping in the log yet, but I'm sure they will eventually. I hope it provides them somewhere cool, though the hot weather does seem to have left us for the time being.
