Slinky the rat (right) will go visiting this week!

One of the people I work with requested that I bring in my rats — Diddy, Mouse and Slinky — so she can meet them. I was somewhat dubious about doing this at first, especially when it’s warm here and they will be in quite a small cage for the duration of my working day.

I’ve decided that I will take in Slinky, because she’s the smallest and will get along fine in the carry cage I normally use for vet trips or short journeys. My rats Diddy and Mouse will be fine without her for half a day, and Slinky will no doubt get plenty of attention from everyone at work (those who aren’t squeamish about rats, at least, although one of them owns a snake!).

I’m quite interested to see what people’s reactions will be. Slinky is a lot like Dumbo the rat in the sense that everyone warms to her whether they have an issue with rats or not. My colleague said she would love to see her bouncing around the office. It’s a very new build, so there is nowhere she could escape to, but I would still rather avoid letting a tiny rat loose in an area of that size! I would never catch her again and would end up leaving the cage in the room overnight for her to eventually clamber back into and fall asleep.

That’s one of the nice things about rats. I don’t feel as though they have any burning urge to escape; they really just want to explore things. When rats get tired, they will curl up wherever is available (often my lap or inside my shirt) and simply go to sleep. Mouse, however, does have an irritating habit of going to sleep behind the three-seater sofa in our back living room, which often results in some furniture shifting to retrieve her.

I will probably take Slinky in with me on Friday morning, so more on her adventures next week!
