Slinky the rat (left), shown here with her sister Diddy the rat, is getting used to the new things in her life.

I’m Slinky, and I’m a dumbo rat — a Siamese dumbo rat to be precise. I’m mostly champagne in color, and I have a brown smudge on my nose and the base of my tail. Oh! I also have pink eyes, which my ratty friends tell me are pretty, but they don’t help me to see very much.

I’ve been living with my new owner for about four months now with my sister, Diddy, and another older rat, Mouse. Auntie Mouse is nice and very cuddly, but she can be a little bit grumpy sometimes and tugs my ears. That’s OK, really, because she makes for a very warm and comfortable pillow when it comes to bedtime and she loves to groom both Diddy and me.

It was a little daunting at first to be in a new cage with a new rat and all of these new things around me — not to mention my new owner! We rats are quite cautious when it comes to strange and unusual things, but once we realize something isn’t going to hurt us, we quickly get used to it!

For instance, my owner recently put a large, rough object in our cage and then she would pick me up and put me on top of it. It was sort of cold under my feet, and I didn’t know what it was, so I bounced off every time! Eventually I realized it was something known as a brick, and it was to help keep our claws nice and trim. They get quite sharp over time — Auntie Mouse is always scratching herself by accident with them!

I don’t want to end up with claws like that, so I clamber onto the brick whenever I get the chance. It’s right under our water bottle, so it makes an excellent ledge.

Well, that’s all from me for this week. I think Diddy would like to have her say next!
