Will rats Mouse, Slinky and Diddy enjoy the outdoors as much as the indoors?

I took Diddy the rat for a stroll around the garden while it was sunny over the weekend. Of course, I didn't actually let her on the ground because she would run like the wind and then no doubt panic about a noise she had never heard before, causing her to hide until it grew dark. The chances of me ever finding her again would be slim!

Anyway, I think she enjoyed the new smells and sounds, though she did cling quite tightly to my shirt. When I sat down by the pond, she was definitely interested in the frogs and no doubt the water. Both she and Slinky, another of my rats, have shown a bit of an affinity for water.

I'm looking forward to taking the cage outside to let the rats explore the grass when it’s warm enough to do so. No doubt Mouse, my other rat, will be as cowardly as she was last year, even though she is far larger and thus more daunting than she ever has been.

I initially wanted to take Slinky out for a wander, too, but with her habit of jumping off my shoulder onto whatever she spots, it might have resulted in a missing ratty — and she's far too small to survive in my rather large garden. Having said that, she can jump quite high when she needs to get out the way of something (usually Mouse when she comes barrelling down the bars to get to the refilled food bowl!)

I’ve noticed a change in Diddy. She lets me hold her without much of a fuss now and just lazily flops about. She is, however, still a little wary about sitting on my shoulder, but I don’t know if that’s primarily because she’s not too sure of her balance. Being a large rat for her age, she might be a bit thrown by it, so I will have to encourage her to keep on practicing!
