My rat Mouse has been particularly nippy this week, and she always seems to direct her bites toward little Slinky, one of my two new rats. My other new rat, Diddy, seems to know better and instantly goes on the defensive whenever Mousey comes anywhere near her. Slinky, however, being sweet and naive, doesn’t realize that Mouse might go for her even when she’s not doing anything wrong. What she’s very good at, however, is getting out of the way fairly sharpish. Her jumping skills are akin to my former rat Dumbo’s, and she launches herself up the side of the bars in one leap.
My three rats have very different personalities. Diddy is very lazy and laid-back. She doesn’t really do much unless she’s after food, at which point she hurls herself at the door of the cage eagerly awaiting noms. Slinky, on the other hand, does this whenever someone even walks into the kitchen, let alone the laundry where their cage is! As for Mouse, she’s always her usual self, isn’t she? She is a combination of the two of them and always throws herself at the bars because she always expects to be fed! She has lost a bit of weight over the past month, but she’s still a bit on the chunky side. I think this is fairly normal for a rat of her age in the environment she’s in — plus she is very greedy. I can’t even encourage her to exercise, because when I let her out for a run about, she just curls up behind the sofa and goes to sleep.
