Rats Diddy (front) and Slinky continue to explore their new home.
The rats have been very entertaining today. From time to time I let them run around on the bathroom floor while I’m in the bath, just something a bit different from the living room to keep them happy. There is absolutely nowhere for them to get out and nothing dangerous to them lying around, so it’s the perfect place to let them explore and climb.
I tend to just lie back and leave them to it, so imagine my surprise when I suddenly felt tiny little rat paws on my shoulder! Slinky, brave little mite that she is, had climbed up the laundry basket and hopped over to the edge of the bath. Diddy quickly followed her, and then caused havoc of the domino variety when she leaned on a bottle of shampoo and sent it tumbling into four other bottles. Of course, this made both rats skittish, and they ran for their lives as if the sky was falling, only to tentatively return moments later to see what the damage was.
Deciding the rats weren’t causing much harm, I left them to it. It’s a corner bath, so they have a bit of space to potter around on. True to their nature, however, they didn’t decide to explore this — they opted for the sliver of ledge around the side of the bath. I winced as they ran back and forth, jumping over one another and play fighting. I knew that any moment, one of them was going to end up in the water.
Thankfully, neither of them did! Not until, at least, Slinky decided it was a great idea to hop down onto the soap ledge and dip her paws in the water, at which moment she slumped and tumbled in head first. Needless to say, that didn’t teach her a lesson. A little bit of water never hurt anyone, after all. She in fact seemed to enjoy it, and after the little bath I gave the two of them in the sink last week, I’m tempted to see if they enjoy having a swim. They will be the first rats I’ve had that like it, if so!
