Dumbo The Rat's New Diet

By Shellyane Bryan
A rat owner from England shares tales of living with her first rat, Queen Dumbo Duncanson-Bryan, and a rat named Mouse.

The vet has ordered that Dumbo the rat be given a higher-calorie diet to keep up her weight and strength.

I honestly expected my rat Dumbo to have passed on by now, but, to my surprise, she is actually hanging on and has shown a small improvement. She is still struggling to walk properly, but she still gets about (very quickly, too!), and she is still eating and drinking.

These past few days she has also been making the effort to come to the cage door, something she had until recently stopped doing. I don’t think she’s going to show much physical improvement aside from a bit of weight gain, but I’m glad she isn’t suffering.

To keep her comfortable and happy, I’ve been hand-feeding her anything and everything I can, just to ensure she is still eating. As she hasn’t been too interested in the usual rat mix I give them, I’ve been giving her a mix of wholemeal and wheat foods, with nuts, fruit and treats. As the vet said, I need to make sure she is getting a high level of calories to keep her weight and strength up. I’ve given her anything from cereal to wholemeal pasta!

Of course, she hasn’t complained once, though I do feel a bit sorry for Mouse, my other rat that is now on the opposite kind of diet and, therefore, is getting a very limited amount of treats and fresh food. She has been stealing Dumbo’s food and has ballooned to a rather substantial weight. I’m worried it’s going to affect her health, so I’m taking action now! I’m sure she’s going to be grateful in the long run, though I still feel terribly guilty about giving Dumbo tasty treats and not poor Mousey — though she certainly steals some from time to time.
