Dumbo the rat enjoyed Christmas treats and presents this season.

I hope that everyone enjoyed a wonderful Christmas with their family and their pets. It’s such a nice time of year, especially when it’s as cold and wintery as it is here in England.

We’ve had a lot of snow over the past month, and part of me wanted to see if my pet rats, Dumbo and Mouse, would have fun pottering about in the snow, but I worried that their little paws would be far too cold, and I didn’t want that of course.

This time last year I had only had Mouse for a couple of weeks, and she was getting terribly dry skin so I had to moisturize her little feet. She didn’t like that very much at all to say the least!

Dumbo is now 2 1/2 years old! What an old lady she is, but I’m ecstatic she’s still with us. For a rat, she is doing exceptionally well. I had a little worry over Christmas because my brother, who has rats of his own, mentioned he could feel a lump under her chest. He insisted it wasn’t anything to worry about, but I couldn’t help it. This was after a few celebratory glasses of champagne, too, so I got myself into a bit of a panic. Eventually, I accepted that, serious lump or not, Dumbo has had a very, very good life.

Anyway, my rats definitely enjoyed themselves as much as myself and my family. We all ate a lot, that’s for certain. Mouse and Dumbo had their treats, got plenty of cuddles and love from everyone (except my nan, who is terrified of rodents!) and spent most of their time fast asleep, curled up together in one of the boxes from a present.

It’s funny how rats love to doze in a box, then five seconds later they’re tearing the thing to pieces. Nothing is safe when in ratty paws.
