Rat Affection And Christmas Outfits

By Shellyane Bryan
A rat owner from England shares tales of living with her first rat, Queen Dumbo Duncanson-Bryan, and a rat named Mouse.

Dumbo the rat is more affection than her cagemate, Mouse.

I’ve been doing my usual thing and looking up videos of other people's rats on YouTube. I really like it when I find a video of a rat doing something that my rats, Mouse and Dumbo, do, and I came across this video. It shows exactly the kind of thing Dumbo tends to do. The older she gets, the more she likes to lick. It doesn’t matter what — hand, toe, neck, nose, ears. It’s a bit disgusting at times, but I let her get away with it because she’s just so cute about it.

Mouse is starting to pick up the same habit, too, though she has always been the less affectionate of my rats. She rarely bruxes, unlike Dumbo who pretty much does it constantly. I can only see this as good thing though, because it at least means she is spending most of her time being a happy ratty. That’s the most important thing.

I’m still trying to decide what to buy my rats for Christmas. I’ve been looking for some tiny Santa hats to get them to wear, because last year a U.K. drink company did a promotion that involved giving away tiny woollen hats with all their drinks, which were the perfect size for a ratty head. If anyone knows where I can get some, I would really appreciate the help!

Aside from dressing up my rats in silly costumes, I would like to do something special for them because they both make me incredibly happy, if not by hurling themselves at the cage door the moment someone walks into the room, then by gambolling and wrestling with each other in the middle of the living room floor like small, furry children.

My boys LOVE pretending to be dentists. If you attempt to keep your lips shut, they will pry you open. If you let them clean your teeth, they will attempt to unclench your jaw so they can stick their heads on your mouth.
Like you said, it can get pretty gross but they get away with it because they are so cute!!
