Farewell To Leon The Hamster

By Shellyane Bryan
A rat owner from England shares tales of living with her first rat, Queen Dumbo Duncanson-Bryan, and a rat named Mouse.

Rats Dumbo (shown) and Mouse have been quieter since their pal Leon The Hamster passed on.

Leon The Hamster died last Thursday. I’ve been feeling really quite miserable about the whole thing, as he was only 2 1/2 and usually my hamsters live for, at the very least, three years. We think he died from a kidney infection.

Leon’s death came as quite a shock, and he really did try to hang on. In the end, I suppose it was just his time to go. It sort of felt as though my rats Mouse and Dumbo knew when he was gone though, because they were a lot calmer than usual. He’s normally in the small cage next to theirs, so they would have always been able to smell him, and now he’s gone.

This is all sort of strange given the blog entry I made last week about rats and the myths about them being able to sense things. My rats have generally been very quiet and haven’t been fighting nearly as much as they usually do. I wish I had paid more attention to the way they were acting when Leon was dying, but obviously my focus was on him.

A lot has been making me sad lately. I saw a beautiful Russian blue female dumbo rat in a pet store a couple of weeks ago that was fully grown, but I’ve been forbidden from getting any more rats while I have Mouse and Dumbo. I plan to get two baby rats once one of them has gone. My mum will just have to be overwhelmed by their cuteness and let me off for completely ignoring her.

I really wanted to give that dumbo rat a home, but I couldn’t. I just hope that someone else who is as big a sucker as I am gives her a happy family, because it depresses me to think of any animal growing up and dying in a pet shop, never getting the attention and love it deserves.
