Rat Redecorating

Rats Dumbo and Mouse had different reactions to the new cage accessories.

For a few weeks now, I’ve been thinking about adding some bits and pieces to the cage of my rats, Mouse and Dumbo. I mentioned a couple of months ago that I was looking for some sputniks, but I couldn’t find them anywhere. I eventually gave up on the idea and went to the pet store with the intention of picking up some kind of play park for them that I had seen on the website, a sort of jungle gym for rats.

As it turned out, that particular item was very expensive, so I picked up a large tube I could hang from the top of the cage instead. However, as I walked around, picking up some of the usual bits and pieces — food, treats, bedding, sawdust — I finally saw them! Sputniks! In an array of colors.

Unfortunately, upon closer inspection, I realized poor Dumbo probably wasn’t likely to be able to fit into them, but on the other hand, Mouse definitely would; she has a fondness for places she can cram herself into to sleep. I picked up two of those along with a tube and brought them home, eager to introduce them to the rats!

I have never seen Mouse more excited about something. She was bouncing around from one thing to the next, sniffing, exploring and enjoying herself. She made it known that the blue sputnik was hers, curled up inside it and went to sleep. Dumbo, on the other hand, was frightened from the moment I peeled the sticky labels off. She scarpered into the wigwam and refused to come out. I tried to encourage her to explore and enjoy herself, but the moment I put her anywhere near the tube, she panicked, backed up and gracelessly flopped to the floor.

Dumbo has since grown accustomed to everything, though she won’t willingly go near things. At least Mouse is happy enough. I also bought my rats a little rubber ball called a Tumble n’ Treat, which took them less than 10 minutes to completely destroy.
