Hot Weather And Rat Ice Games!

By Shellyane Bryan

Rats Dumbo and Mouse weren't too interested in fishing for ice, they just wanted the ice cubes.

Dumbo the rat has been slowing down a little now she’s getting on a bit. She is still a very active rat. As soon as I open the cage door, she is pottering around the work surface as though she owns the place, but I am starting to notice the difference in her.

Outside of the cage Mouse the rat spends a lot of her time exploring, dashing around and climbing. Dumbo, though she still loves to explore, has started going to sleep on the sofa after she has spent about half an hour outside the cage — this is when she isn’t following me around the room! Despite that, she is a very speedy little rat, and sometimes it’s hard to catch her, so I’m not worried I’ll be losing her any time soon. She must be about 2 years old now.

I recently saw a video online of a rat owner teaching their rats to ice-fish. Knowing how much my ratties love ice cubes already, and as the weather has gone incredibly hot again, I thought this might provide us all with a bit of entertainment and an excellent way to cool off.

Unfortunately, my rats didn’t appreciate the sentiment and totally ignored the idea of fishing; instead they knocked the glass over to get to the ice cubes that way instead. Dumbo then hoarded them in a corner, apparently unaware that in a few minutes time there wouldn’t be any ice cubes there anymore.

Right now she is sitting on her favorite chair, grooming like a little beauty queen, while Mouse is trying to sneak her way into the box of chocolates on the ottoman as if I can’t see her. Rats, being rats, will eat absolutely anything put in front of them so it stands to reason they would enjoy chocolates too, but that is something strictly off limits. Dumbo is fat enough already!

It has started to thunder, but neither of my rats seems particularly concerned about the torrential downpour and terrifyingly loud thunder claps. I suppose so long as neither of them have to be outside in such weather, they don’t care. Pampered little monsters.

You really love your rats! This is such a heart warming story. It's nice to know that people can be trained to not think "rats Are evil!" They aren't... they are curious, and affectionate, and a "Ball" to watch and interact with. Hooray!
