Reunion With My Rats

By Shellyane Bryan
A rat owner from England shares tales of living with her first rat, Queen Dumbo Duncanson-Bryan, and a rat named Mouse.

After some time to adjust, Dumbo the rat and her sister Mouse are used to being home again.

Over the weekend, my brother brought my rats home. I think they were a bit confused when I came home and first let them out. I read that rats only have a memory of around three weeks, so I was worried they had forgotten home (and me!) as I hadn’t seen them for over a month.

It was a little upsetting that they didn’t seem at all interested in me. Dumbo even forgot the tricks I taught her, and was more interested in re-exploring the floor than pottering around on two legs. Mouse was her usual disinterested self, though she hasn’t stopped sleeping in the empty water bowl, despite having grown considerably since I last saw her.

Dumbo is normally a very licky rat. She usually sat and licked my hand for a good five minutes before she decided to wander around. When I first got her out this time, I barely even got a sniff. I was worried that being away from my rats for a month had changed them, or that they really had completely forgotten who I was.

Either way, I left them to get settled in for a while, re-used to the sound of the washing machine, and cars driving by and general sounds of the house. I fed them as usual (only once a day now, because Dumbo has gotten fatter!). After a few hours passed, they seemed to settle in again.

Thankfully, both of them are now back to how I remember them being. Dumbo is licky and stupid and cute, and Mouse is excitable and insane.

My brother was playing on Wii Fit while he was here, and his sock was wet for some reason. While Mouse was running around, she found it fascinating and wouldn’t leave his foot alone. Rats seem to have some kind of affinity for toes and socks. If they are going to bite anything, that is what it will be.

I’m glad to have them home, anyway. It was never quite the same without them, and even my Mum missed them. She doesn’t even like rats!

It looks like I will have to reteach Dumbo her tricks, but maybe it’s Mouse’s time to learn now. She certainly likes the chocolate rat treats.
