Mouse The Rat Has Her Say

By Shellyane Bryan
A rat owner from England shares tales of living with her first rat, Queen Dumbo Duncanson-Bryan, and a rat named Mouse.

Mouse the rat enjoys playing a peekaboo game with her owner.

Seeing as my big sister rat, Dumbo, got to type a blog of her own last week, I only think it fair that I, the beautiful Mouse, get to have my say too.

Now I don’t mind too much when our owner goes away, because when she’s away she isn’t trying to snip my manicured claws all the time or trying to teach me any silly little tricks for rat treats. Don’t I deserve rat treats just for being cute?  I think I do, but apparently we have to work for them because we rats are an intelligent species.

I like to play chase games with my owner. It’s fun to dart behind the sofa and then creep up to a little opening and poke my nose out to see if she’s watching. When she spots me, I run back into hiding, and then I do the whole thing all over again!

My owner doesn’t try to teach me tricks because she thinks I don’t have a very good attention span, but the truth is that tricks don’t interest me! I could walk on my back legs and spin and come to my name if I wanted to — just like Dumbo! I choose to do what I want to do.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my owner! She feeds me and waters me and makes sure I’m happy. She gives me toys to play with and lets me have a run around every day for at least an hour. She gives me everything I need!

But tricks? Tricks just aren’t cool for a little rat like me. I’m the rebellious sort, you see. I like to do what I like to do, and that’s running around, bouncing, and pouncing on Dumbo when she least expects it! Sometimes, I even clamber up to the top of Leon the Hamster’s cage, but he doesn’t mind. He spends most of his day fast asleep in bed, dreaming of all the fresh fruit and veggies he can eat. We have an understanding, Leon and I.

Well, I hear our owner is back from vacation now, so that means Dumbo and I will be heading home soon. I’m excited to see her. I don’t get nearly enough treats up here at the rat-sitters. Here, those rabbits get all the attention.
