Adriana got a chance to get to know Douglas the hamster on his own "turf."

Hi, everyone! I hope you all had a happy and safe Halloween with your hamster friends. The other day, I realized that it’s been nearly a year since my dad got his very own hamster, Douglas. You got to hear all about Douglas when we first got him, so I thought you might like an update.

Douglas was a tad skittish and jumpy when we first got him; really, he just wasn’t sure about us. But Dad put in a lot of quality taming time with Douglas, and now he’s just the sweetest hamster you could ever meet. He’s still not the cuddly kind, though, but that’s just because he won’t hold still long enough to cuddle! He is always on the go.

Because he always ran so much in the wheel at night, we decided that he needed more exercise, but he didn’t like to run in a hamster ball. Eventually we realized that he likes to run in a big “playpen” in the living room! We checked and double-checked to make sure there were no hazards for him in that area, and we placed portable barriers to keep him from getting loose in the house.

Now every night, Douglas is the king of his part of the room. He has his little hiding places and certain routes that he always takes. If you should enter his domain, he runs up to you to see who you are. If he knows you, he’ll actually climb up on your feet! Dad sometimes visits with him by sitting in the playpen. Douglas will run around him two or three times, and then hop up onto Dad’s lap. He’ll sit there with Dad for a few moments, then hop back down and continue his adventures. He’s such a busy boy!

Once, Mom tried to sweep the floor while Douglas was running around (she did so very carefully, of course). Douglas ran up to the broom and chased it back and forth as she swept! Most hamsters would be afraid of being out in the open and would run away from a large moving object like the broom — but not Douglas!

Apparently, nobody told Douglas that he is just a little hamster. He seems to think he is the Lord of All He Surveys, as he trundles around his territory, chasing away brooms and welcoming visitors. Our whole family enjoys interacting with him on his “turf,” and he seems really happy to have his nightly taste of freedom.
