Liz knows a lot about taking care of hamsters, which makes her an excellent hamster-sitter.

Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a happy Fourth of July! My hamsters probably didn’t realize that it was the Fourth of July, but if they had, I wonder what they would have thought of the fireworks.

I’ve had two harp-related excursions this summer — harp camp and a harp convention. Soon, I’ll be off to an engineering camp in Indiana! Quite a busy summer, and none of it would be possible without the help of my dedicated hamster-sitter.

I’ve written before about my friend Liz, when I told you about Fang’s teeth and Liz’s efforts to tame her (Fang is doing fine, by the way). But I felt that she deserved another mention now, seeing as I’m running all over the country to camp after camp thanks to her.

Before Liz stayed with the hamsters, I couldn’t leave the hamsters for more than three or four days at a time, unless Mom and Dad took care of them (and usually they were with me wherever I was). The days that I could be gone usually weren’t any fun either, as I spent them worrying about the hamsters back at home.

But now that we have Liz to watch over the hamsters, I can enjoy my camps and trips away from home, safe in the knowledge that there’s someone back at home to feed the hamsters, check on them and even clean their cages. She calls me if anything goes wrong, but by now she’s such an expert at hamster care that she rarely needs my help. Right when she was starting out as a hamster-sitter, she took care of a brand-new litter of Roborovski hamsters that were born while we were away on vacation.

Liz hopes to be a veterinarian someday, and I feel confident that when she is, she’ll be one of the most hamster-knowledgeable vets around!

What do you do for your hamsters when you’re heading out of town? Do you have a hamster-sitter you really trust?
